The Curtain - by Andrea Garzón

There are two key concepts that will help us understand what exactly the purpose of Jesus’ death was. Those vital terms are flesh and circumcision. There was something that separated us from God. The Scriptures often call it ‘veil’, ‘curtain’ or ‘middle wall of separation’. “Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away”.
There was a veil, a middle wall or curtain that alienated us from God. Through the Fall we inherited a mind which was not our original mind. Adam’s awareness, how he perceived God and himself was severely altered when he fell. God never changed. It was the way he saw God that changed. This was a one-sided change of awareness, because God remained faithful in His love towards His creation.
What happened in Eden was not an issue concerning ‘knowledge’. A covenant was instituted. Contrary to ‘knowing’ the truth, they ‘knew’ a lie, and this ‘knowledge’, again, is not referring to an intellectual knowledge. Let’s consider the expression ‘to know’ like when Abraham 'knew' Sarah. The ‘knowing’ between these two alludes to union. Our first father Adam was united (married) to an illusion, his eyes were ‘opened’ to a reality that was not the truth but perceived as truth, to a ‘light’ that was really darkness, but perceived as light.
Adam first fell in his mind and then ate the fruit. The partaking of the tree was just a subsequent action, a consequence of his already fallen mind, which acceded to the statement: "God is a liar". The issue was not an angry God; the issue was a man with a guilty conscience. “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but because you insist: ‘We do see clearly’ you are unable to escape your guilt.” (John 9:41) “At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness" (Genesis 3:7).
Now, how could God regenerate the fallen mind? How could He cleanse man’s guilty conscience? He had to tear down that curtain that estranged us from Him. It is here the concept of circumcision add to our understanding. In the Old Covenant circumcision was a shadow of what was going to happen to our hearts in Christ. Since the Fall was far more than ‘wrong knowledge’, the remedy was not as simple as changing the ‘wrong information’ with the ‘right one’. There was a fortress built up in our minds that needed to be destroyed.
We needed a redeemer, someone that could embody this illusion and eradicate it. We needed a bridge that connected us back to the Father. We needed a man, a type in whom all mankind could be represented. This man had to share our weaknesses and anxieties but at the same time remain incorruptible if he was to be of any help in reconciling fallen humanity to God; someone both fully God and fully man; someone who had the power to circumcise our hearts.
Incarnation means that the Son of God had to become the Son of Man, that is, to enter into Adamic skin and share in the same brokenness that had befallen mankind but without losing His oneness with the Father. Otherwise, Jesus would not have been a savior, but merely a martyr, someone that just came to suffer death but was of no profit to us.
“Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the curtain, that is, His flesh.” (Hebrews 10:19-20) “For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances…” (Ephesians 2:14-15)
At the cross Jesus’ embodied this veil, this ‘foreskin’ that covered our hearts, and when His flesh was torn, the veil was torn. Jesus became(ACW-as if unto) a “fallen man”; a man also living under the curse so that through his death and resurrection we could be disassociated from the dominion of darkness FOREVER!

    • Ole Henrik Skjelstad Wow! This is very profound. New light was pouring in when I saw how you tied the veil and circumcision to redemption. Terrific accomplishment!

    • Nick Cabbiness Andrea, this is pure spirit, flat-out amazing stuff. I'm going to have to reread it, meditate upon it to glean everything you're saying. Please re-post in Grace Folk and Oasis of Grace, or I will if you like. I've been meditating upon the veil in 2 Corinthians 3 for the last several months, and you've definitely opened up some new things for me to think about. Maybe we can compare notes! Thanks so much:)

Interesting perspective! So when we partake of His broken body, it also represents the breaking down of the wall of seperation and the law of commandments. That's why our Saviour's final instruction to us was to remember His broken body.

      1 ...Corinthians 11:23-26:
Take, eat;this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

And as often as we do it, we are reminded that the law is abolished, the curse is broken! Hallelujah! :)

    • Colin Lagerwall No longer covered with fig leaves (which represents the law), which is a pretense or facade of ourselves, not our true selves, we are now open, unashamed because our true glory, the righteousness of God, covers us without concealing us...rather it puts US on display for His glory
